Tomago Aluminium has reached agreement with the Commonwealth and State governments to secure the long-term future of the Tomago Smelter.

Under the agreement, Tomago will enter into a 10-year power purchase agreement with government to supply reliable, internationally competitive electricity through to 2038, following expiration of the current electricity contract in 2028.

Tomago will support the agreement with A$1.1 billion of investment on the smelter, including A$100 million for decarbonisation initiatives and demand response capability.

Tomago CEO Jerome Dozol said:

“We are delighted with this outcome and thank the Commonwealth and NSW Governments, as well as our people, unions and our shareholders, for working constructively with us to secure a long-term future for the smelter.

“This is a great outcome for our workers, who have lived through a great deal of uncertainty over the last two years, and for the Hunter region and local businesses and suppliers who Tomago is such an important part of the community.

“This agreement provides the certainty needed to invest in the future of the smelter. Over the coming years, we will invest A$1.1 billion to improve reliability and performance, extend asset life, and strengthen our competitiveness.”

About A$1 billion of investment will fund the work needed to keep Tomago competitive over the long term, including critical plant and equipment upgrades, major maintenance, asset life work and productivity improvements.

A further $100 million will be invested in demand response capability and decarbonisation initiatives, helping Tomago lower emissions over time, increase flexibility and support a more resilient New South Wales electricity system.

As New South Wales’ largest electricity user, Tomago has an important role to play in the energy transition. Through this agreement, Tomago will provide large-scale demand response capability that will help strengthen system reliability, support more renewable energy and position Tomago as a global leader in demonstrating how aluminium smelting can remain competitive and reliable in a renewable-powered energy system.
