Taking a Leap and Changing Industries at Tomago Aluminium

Jordan Brownlowe’s journey at Tomago Aluminium Company (TAC) is a strong example of how diverse backgrounds, transferable skills, and the right support can open new career pathways and build long-term confidence.

Today, Jordan works as a Planning and Customer Service Advisor, where she plays a key role in connecting the end-to-end process from casting to shipping. “My role is about coordinating casting schedules through to the delivery of high-quality products to customers, both domestically and internationally,” she explains. “No two days are the same, and I really enjoy being closely involved in the production side of the process, as well as understanding what happens after to ensure everything is delivered efficiently and on time.”

Before joining TAC, Jordan spent more than 17 years in a completely different industry. After leaving school early, she completed an apprenticeship and built a long career in the hair and beauty industry, including running her own business. While she enjoyed the work, over time she felt the need for a change. “I was seeking a new challenge, a different direction, and improved work-life balance,” she says. With a young family and limited formal qualifications, retraining often felt out of reach.

Jordan joined TAC as a shift operator in the casthouse, unsure where the path might lead. What she found was an organisation willing to invest in potential. “After joining TAC, I discovered new skills and developed a renewed confidence and outlook on learning,” she says. “I was able to upskill and gain qualifications that had previously felt unattainable.” Looking back, she encourages others to consider a similar step. “I now actively encourage people to be brave and consider making a change if they are interested in trying something different. It has been one of the best decisions I have made.”

Professional development has been a defining part of Jordan’s experience. During her time at TAC, she has completed a Certificate III and a Diploma in Leadership and Management, maintained operational qualifications, and participated in extensive cross-functional training. “These learning opportunities have allowed me to continue developing both my technical and leadership capabilities,” she says, adding that they have helped her build confidence and contribute more effectively across the business.

Just as important to Jordan is the sense of belonging she feels at work. “Belonging, for me, means having the freedom to be myself and the confidence to share ideas and respectfully challenge perspectives,” she explains. She values the openness of the culture and the reassurance that support is always available. “There is a comfort knowing that if you reach out, someone is there to assist. That has always left me feeling respected in my time here.”

Jordan believes her previous experience in a fast-paced, service-driven industry adds real value to her work at TAC. “Operating in that environment required adaptability, clear communication, and strong relationship-building skills,” she says. “Anyone with fresh eyes can make an immediate impact, and a good work ethic is infectious.”

As a working parent, flexibility has also been critical to her wellbeing. Jordan describes TAC as having a genuine family-first approach. “I have consistently felt supported and understood when balancing work commitments with responsibilities outside of work,” she says. “Knowing there is trust and understanding in place allows me to focus on my role at work while also being present for my family when it matters most.”

As a woman working in heavy industry, Jordan’s experience has been one of inclusion, respect, and opportunity. “I can honestly say that I have never once felt disadvantaged or disrespected because I am a woman,” she says. “My experience has always been based on actions and performance, rather than gender or appearance.”

Looking ahead, Jordan is excited by the continued focus on culture and people at TAC. “There has been a real shift toward creating a safe, supportive, and encouraging workplace,” she says. “I’ve always believed that happy employees are productive employees, and it’s great to be part of an organisation that genuinely prioritises wellbeing, engagement, and job satisfaction.”

Jordan’s story shows how Tomago Aluminium supports people to take brave steps, build new skills, and grow careers they may never have imagined, creating a workplace where diverse experiences are recognised as strengths and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
