To mark International Women in Engineering Day, Tomago Aluminium’s Carbon Manager, Magali Gendre, was out in our community, inspiring future engineers and sharing the importance of diversity in STEM.
Magali was invited to present at the University of Newcastle’s HunterWiSE event – a celebration of Women in Engineering. The session focused on the power of early engagement in encouraging young women to explore careers in engineering and STEM, as well as the real-world value that diversity brings to innovation and engineering outcomes.
Magali shared her own journey as a female leader in the field– highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities that have shaped her career.
“Creating inclusive environments isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s essential for innovation and progress,” said Magali.
Just days earlier, Magali also joined a STEM outreach program at Merewether High School, where she worked alongside Year 8 students to design a water filtration system. The program, run in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders Australia and Engineers Australia – Newcastle Division, introduced students to engineering principles through hands-on teamwork and problem solving.
“It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic young minds tackling real-world challenges,” Magali said. “If even one student walks away thinking, ‘Maybe I could be an engineer,’ then we’ve done something really worthwhile.”
Thank you, Magali, for being such a passionate advocate for diversity in STEM – and for showing the next generation what’s possible.
