On Friday 3 December, the Hon Matt Kean, NSW Treasurer and Minister for the Energy and Environment, visited Tomago Aluminium to hold a press conference to announce the opening of registrations of interest (ROI) for the next major piece in the development of the State’s renewable energy zones (REZ) – the Hunter-Central Coast REZ.
The Hunter and Central Coast regions are the heart of NSW’s energy system, supplying power to about 60% of the State’s homes, businesses, and industry, and employing a skilled energy generation workforce.
Four out of the five State’s coal-fired power stations are located in the Hunter and Central Coast regions and these are expected to close in the next 15 years. The Hunter-Central Coast REZ will connect multiple renewable energy generators and storage projects (such as batteries and pumped hydro) and play a critical role in replacing the State’s ageing coal-fired power stations.
“This is great news for the manufacturing industry and Tomago Aluminium and reflects all the hard work we and others have been doing,” Matt Howell said.
Minister Kean was accompanied by NSW Parliament Secretary for the Hunter – Taylor Martin, Member for Upper Hunter – Dave Lyzell, Adam Crouch – Member for Terrigal and Mike Young – Energy Corporation of NSW.
Following the press conference, our VIP’s headed into the potlines for a tour. The tour started with a visit to the F room with an Anode change where the guests were greeted by Andy Robbins – LMO and Casthouse Manager, Grant Farrow – Services Superintendant Electrolysis, Tom Connell – Process Superintendent Electrolysis.
The Minister and his colleagues really enjoyed their interactions and all staff involved made a very favourable impression on behalf of the business.
