​​Coming Home

In 2015, TAC rolled out our first ‘Mates Looking After Mates’ program to encourage all employees to look out for each other as well as themselves. The program ignited a culture amongst all of its employees that is still very much present today and is being reinforced with the 2nd ‘Mates Looking After Mates’ program that is currently being rolled out.

Every employee is expected to complete the 2-hour program which addresses complacency in the workplace and everyday stress including mental health. The session also includes a powerful film, entitled ‘Coming Home’ which features current and former employees talking about their experiences and the impact of workplace incidents. Those involved talk frankly about incidents that have happened to them on the job and how that impacted themselves and their families.

“It was a very emotional journey for everyone involved in making the video,” TAC’s Safety and Training Advisor, Trish Rapley, said.

The program also includes discussions about risk normalisation and the importance of identifying hazards and knowing that it’s alright to ask someone, ‘Are you ok?’ As humans, all of us are guilty at one stage or another of becoming complacent in their jobs and with the familiarity of a task we can lose sight of the potential hazards. The ‘Coming Home’ film is an emotional reminder for us to stop, slow down and to re assess with ‘fresh eyes’ about the environment we work and live in. It’s about making sure we have each other’s backs and that each and every one of us make it home to our families at the end of our shift.

The program finishes with everyone making their own commitment to identify why they are keeping themselves safe. They are also asked what action they will take to look after their mates and some responses included, ‘I will have the courage to speak up when I see something unsafe’ and ‘I will listen to my mates if they seem stressed’. Others said they will be more observant about their environment following the session and committed to ‘not taking shortcuts’.

After attending the session recently, Dan Lines said, “I’ll walk away from today trying to be more diligent about having more conversations with my team and with everything I do.” Joe Cook also completed the session and said, “I’ll keep an open mind from now on and look at what I’m doing and always listen more carefully.”

Each Training session is designed for small groups of approx. 12 employees from a variety of departments across the site and is also supported by a member of the Health & Safety Committee.


Sessions are held twice daily, 6.00am to 8.00am and 10.00am to 12.00pm three days per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Tomago's Learning Pad.
