Carly White Represents Tomago at National TAFE week

Well done to Carly White, one of our 2nd year Apprentice Mechanical Fitter’s here at Tomago Aluminium, who recently with the support of Tomago and the AMWU, attended National TAFE week in Canberra in order to lobby politicians in support of restoring funding to TAFE. 

At just 18 years of age, Carly had never been away from home on her own and had never been on a plane, however on Monday she packed some courage and boarded a flight to Canberra.

In Canberra she received some training in public speaking, lobbying, and the use of social media to get a point across. This prepared her and the other attending apprentices for a media session, lobbying sessions, TAFE day reception and skilled trades committee dinner which she attended. She had the opportunity to speak to many MP’s including the likes of Bill Shorten, Tanya Plibersek, Anthony Albanese, Doug Cameron, Ged Kearney and Sally McManus, all of whom were very receptive to Carly’s story. Tanya Plibersek was particularly supportive and went on to speak about Carly in parliament. 


Following the success of the trip Carly has been invited to attend the NSW ALP conference this weekend where she will be presenting a speech about who she is, where she comes from and why TAFE is important not only to herself but to her colleagues and future apprentices.

Carly would like to thank the AMWU and Tomago for providing her with this life changing opportunity and despite the nerves she had a great time!
